As I stand at the window of my 19th-floor bedroom, gazing out over the sprawling cityscape below, I can’t help but reflect on my time in Isaan—my first teaching placement three years ago. Back then, I never imagined I’d be here, in the heart of Bangkok, yet it’s the memories of Isaan that often fill my thoughts.
From City Dreams to Rural Reality
Like many, I envisioned my life in Thailand unfolding amidst the hustle and bustle of Bangkok or the charm of Chiang Mai. The allure of city life—the endless food options, vibrant nightlife, and the promise of new experiences—was irresistible. So, when I completed my TEFL course, I was certain I’d land a role in one of these urban centres.
Instead, I was offered a two-month teaching position in Maha Sarakham, a small town in the Isaan region, near Khon Kaen. Initially, I hesitated. Isaan? A rural town? It wasn’t what I’d envisioned. But something nudged me to say yes. And that decision changed everything.
The Journey Begins
As the bus journeyed from Bangkok, the concrete jungle gradually gave way to expansive fields and distant mountains. The landscape was unfamiliar, yet strangely comforting. Arriving in Maha Sarakham in the evening, I arrived at a simple, low-rise building managed by a kind elderly couple. My room was modest—just a bed, a small desk, a wardrobe, and a fridge—but the view from my tiny balcony was breathtaking. Endless greenery stretched out, with mountains kissing the clouds in the distance.
School Days and New Friendships
The first day at school was a whirlwind of nerves and excitement. Within minutes of meeting my students, I knew I was in the right place. They were attentive, curious, and eager to learn. The staff welcomed me with open arms, and soon, we were sharing meals and stories.
Isaan cuisine was a revelation. Dishes like som tam (spicy green papaya salad), larb (minced meat salad), and sticky rice became daily staples. The flavours were bold and vibrant, much like the people. Every meal was an opportunity to connect, to learn, and to savour the essence of Isaan.
Embracing the Isaan Way
As the weeks passed, I found myself falling in love with the slower pace of life. Evenings were spent watching sunsets from my balcony, chatting with friends, or munching my way around the market. I explored forest parks, spent weekends in Khon Kaen, and immersed myself in the rich culture of the region.
A Bittersweet Farewell
When my two months came to an end, I was reluctant to leave. Isaan had become home. The simple lifestyle, the genuine connections, and the serene landscapes had captured my heart. Though I couldn’t stay longer, the memories remain vivid. Looking out over Bangkok now, I realise how much Isaan shaped me. It taught me the value of simplicity, the beauty of community, and the richness of authentic experiences. While city life has its charms, there’s something profoundly special about the quiet corners of Thailand.
