Bangkok's most underrated park
Everyone has heard of the picturesque Benjakitti Park and gone monitor lizard spotting in Lumpini Park, but did you know there’s another huge, beautiful green space in Bangkok that most tourists completely miss? Enter Suan Luang Rama IX Park, one of the city’s most peaceful and underrated parks, and honestly, a bit of a hidden gem.
If the thought of shaded walking paths, blooming flowers, paddle boats, and zen gardens sounds like your idea of a perfect afternoon, then this park definitely deserves a spot on your Bangkok itinerary. It’s calm, spacious, and refreshingly local, making it the perfect escape from the city’s constant buzz.
Where is Suan Luang Rama IX Park?
Suan Luang Rama IX Park is located in Bangkok’s Prawet district, a little outside the city centre. Because of this, it’s far more popular with locals than tourists, which adds to its relaxed, authentic atmosphere. You won’t find crowds of tour groups here, just families, couples, and people enjoying a slower pace of life.
To get there, hop on the Yellow Line MRT and get off at Suan Luang Station. From there, it’s a short Grab ride or motorbike taxi to the park entrance. The journey is simple and well worth the extra effort.
What to Expect Inside the Park
This park is massive and packed with things to see and do. You could easily spend an entire day wandering around without getting bored. Highlights include a beautiful boating lake, a botanical greenhouse, manicured international gardens, a Japanese Zen garden, and even a hedge maze if you’re feeling playful.
Entry to the park costs just ฿20, which is an absolute bargain for how well-maintained and peaceful it is. Paddle boats on the lake are available for ฿60 for 40 minutes, making it a fun and affordable way to enjoy the scenery from the water.
There are a few concession stands inside the park selling drinks and snacks, but it’s a good idea to stock up before entering. Just outside the park gates you’ll find plenty of street vendors and a couple of nearby 7-Elevens, especially near the main entrances.

The Perfect Day at Suan Luang Rama IX Park
If you’re wondering how best to structure your visit, here’s my recommendation for the ultimate laid-back day trip:
Start your journey by arriving at Suan Luang Rama IX MRT Station. From there, take a short walk to MiVana Organic Forest Coffee for a beautifully crafted coffee and some delicious sweet treats. It’s the perfect way to kick off the day.
Next, call a Grab or hop on a motorbike taxi to Suan Luang Rama IX Park. Once inside, turn left and follow the walking path until you reach the Geodesic Dome and Botanical Garden. Take your time here, the cacti displays, tumbling ivy, and tropical plants are genuinely impressive.
After that, wander through the International Garden, where colourful flowers from around the world are in full bloom, before continuing into the tranquil Japanese Zen Garden. This is one of the most peaceful corners of the park and a great spot for photos or a quiet sit-down.
Feeling hungry? Head towards Gate One, exit briefly, and grab some food from the vendors outside. Once you re-enter the park, make your way up to the boating lake and rent a paddle boat for a relaxing glide across the water.
Finish your loop by strolling through the Romani and Chinese gardens before circling back toward the entrance where you started.
When you’re ready to leave, you’ll usually find songthaews and motorbike taxis waiting outside the gates. Use one of these or call a Grab and head over to Seacon Square Mall. It’s the perfect place to cool down in the air-conditioning and enjoy a great meal at one of the many restaurants or the excellent food court before heading back to the MRT.
If you’re looking to experience a quieter, greener side of Bangkok, Suan Luang Rama IX Park is an absolute must. I hope you enjoy discovering one of the city’s most underrated parks as much as I did.
