Solo travel into Thailand teacher
I came to Thailand on my own, as it seems many of the people from Sine did.
Because of a group chat for new recruits I had plans hours after landing in Bangkok. I went to a Muay Thai fight at Rajadamnern and to Khaosan Road, which is quite the welcome to this gorgeous city. During training we quickly created community bonds.
One night I mentioned to a coworker that a lot of us working at SINE are very similar. She said that it’s because no one wants to do this alone. While that may be partially true, I think it’s more because this job attracts like minded people. Leaving our home countries shows we value adventure, being a teacher shows we value human connection.
“The trip left the group chat,” or was never in a group chat to begin with. We all wanted to do something and we took the steps to make it happen. We are the doers, the life makers, the chance takers.
Of course, there will be bumps in the road. You probably won’t get along with everyone and there might be drama. These occurrences make the trip all the more worthwhile. We learn the most about ourselves, and who we want to be, in adversity.
I set out on this adventure with the goal of building confidence. I never thought I would have to rely on myself as much as I have these past three months in my whole life. Even with the support of SINE, colleagues, and people I have met, I still go home to a studio apartment, devoid of my cat or a visitor who I have known since high school.
The fast track to learning about yourself is getting uncomfortable. When you travel abroad, live and teach abroad, you place yourself into a whole new life. You no longer have the opinions of everyone who thinks they know you, you can act like a whole other person if you want to.
This job has allowed me to see parts of Thailand I might never have thought of going to otherwise. I am also able to make money to fund my travels, and it gives me so much peace of mind knowing my savings can stay intact (though I recommend coming with savings to cover the beginning costs and any more expensive trips you may want to go on).
If you value adventure and human connection, if you want to work a relaxed job and truly experience another culture, I highly recommend teaching with SINE in Thailand.
